Music Lyric and Artist a Z
The Ultimate Doors Companion: Artistic Vision by Doug Sundling, Fans of the Doors can be found amongst every generation and in followers of any genre. So comprehensive, this book is of interest to those interested in contemporary culture and recent history. The Doors didn't sound like anything or anybody else. Outwardly their musical technique was not definitive, nor were their songs very advanced in terms of theory or construction. Built on very basic chord progressions and drum lines, the music was characterised by prominent use of the electric organ, absence of a bass player, with the rhythmic interpretation of a jazz drummer vamping Jim Morrison's sensual voice with words which seemed a special friend to his psyche. So why does the Doors' music remain as popular and haunting now as ever before? What makes them still relevant and exciting? Is it that, despite the youth of the originators, their songs portray the wisdom of old age? Is it that their lyrics paint a portrait of what it was like to be human in the 20th century? Is the breadth of their appeal due to the fact that they were poets in the musical sense whose music was a vehicle, not a goal? Written with the remaining members of the Doors, this unique book examines for the first time The Doors' creative processes and their artistic vision. Biography and musical analysis are set into social, political and economic context, each a profound influence on Morrison and his writing. In the words of the band's manager, Danny Sugerman: "Not only is this book an appreciation of the Doors but it's a book the Doors themselves will appreciate".
The Holy Profane: Religion in Black Popular Music by Teresa L. Reed, Popular music has seen a fascinating trend toward the spiritual. Themes once reserved for gospel and Christian music are now found in songs entering the mainstream and topping the charts. While this may be a relatively new phenomenon in the worlds of rock 'n' roll and pop, it has been fundamental to African American musicians for nearly a century. The Holy Profane explores the strong presence of religion in the secular music of twentieth-century African American artists as diverse as Rosetta Tharpe; Sam Cooke; Stevie Wonder; Roberta Flack; Teddy Pendergrass; Marvin Gaye; Earth, Wind & Fire; and Tupac Shakur. Analyzing lyrics and the historical contexts which shaped those lyrics, Teresa L. Reed examines the link between West-African musical and religious culture and the way African Americans convey religious sentiment in secular styles such as the blues, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and gangsta rap. She looks at Pentecostalism and black secular music, minstrelsy and its portrayal of black religion, the black church, "crossing over" from gospel to R&B, images of the black preacher, and the salience of God in the gangsta rap of artists such as Tupac Shakur. Throughout, Reed shows the metamorphosis of religious consciousness throughout the twentieth century, a change directly related to the evolving social and political situation of African Americans.
